“Charmayne James and Scamper. Travis Tryan and Walt. Sherry Cervi and Stingray. Charles Pogue and Scooter.

And Hope Thompson and 8-Track.

They were the great team of our young and growing sport. They were great before their time—just a few more years, and 8-Track would have been a household name; he’d have been proud to be among the horses to usher in the new era of breakaway roping on a national stage. But we lost him yesterday, and the equine side of this sport is lesser for his absence. Hope had 8-Track since the earliest days of her college career, and on him she won everything there was to win in this sport. On him she became Hope Thompson, WPRA World Champion.

Great horses become a part of us, and 8-Track will undeniably be part of who Hope is, and for that, we’re all grateful. Because of 8-Track, Hope gained the confidence we all love inside her, the unshakable, undeniable edge she shares with every friend and student who crosses her path, and the deep ability to care and love that I admire most in my friend.

Hope mounted me on 8-Track when I needed him most. He was a badass—plain and simple. He won, and he lived for it. He is gone way too soon, without good reason. But I’m sure of one thing: there’s a greater plan than what one woman has for one horse. Somewhere, He knows why we lost such a good one so soon. For now, I hope for His comfort for Hope as she endures the loss of 8-Track, and I thank everyone who has already reached out in support.” – Lari Dee Guy
